13th Annual Footcare Conference

"Brighter Futures From Strong Foundations"

Welcome to our footcare conference web review!

Following another hugely successful and sold out conference we are excited to share some highlights with those of you who were unable to attend. To those of you who shared the day with us, thank you once again for your loyalty and for your inspiring comments on your evaluations.

Our theme this year was to encourage each of you to find the strength from our foundations in footcare to “branch” out to meet the opportunities of tomorrow. We are so thankful for those who facilitated our beginning in nursing footcare. Throughout the years our role has evolved and continues to evolve and will be fundamentally different in the next few years than it is today and even more so than yesterday. I’m not sure that I can answer the question as to exactly how it will be different, but different I know it will be… However because we anticipate change we can be a part of the shaping and constructing of our future. This is exciting!!

Each one of our speakers played a role in shaping our future by the knowledge that they shared. Below are some of the highlights from each presentation.

Karen Johnson, RN, CFCN, LMT

  • Karen manages a busy nursing footcare practise in Oregon, USA. Through the use of slides and video, Karen shared many of the skills which she has developed over several years of practise. We all know how important it is to a trades person to have the right tools for a specific task. Karen showed us how new and innovative tools can expand our level of care to our clients.
  • A new line of burs are now available to us in Canada. Keep tuned to upgrades from our original dremel tool!

Carol Hamilton, RN, BSN, MDiv.

  • Carol has been a valuable resource to many nurse entrepreneurs through her publishing as well as through her consulting business.
  • She invited us to explore many creative ways of “Getting the Word Out” about our business.
  • As important as getting the word out is the ability to explain to the public about what we do! Various marketing strategies were discussed.
  • As nurses it is necessary for us to work within the guidelines set by our professional body.

Sue Hart, Former Director of the York Region Alzheimer’s Association

  • Sue brought to us her experience from a lengthy career working with dementia.
  • First, she gave us the facts about the increased rate of dementia, particularly in the area of Alzheimers. Various types of dementia were discussed.
  • Then, through humour, Sue showed us how humour can reduce stress within the workplace as well as when working with clients with dementia and their families. Laugh “with” the person with dementia and find the humour in every situation. Enter into their world as opposed to correcting inaccuracies.
  • We all did a lot of laughing!

Jane Laycock, CPed., C.Ped (C)

  • Jane led us through a brief overview of anatomy to prepare us to understand how the foot works and the “why” behind some common complaints of foot pain.
  • Jane shared some simple techniques for padding for comfort
  • We even learned some simple techniques for lacing shoes!

Kelly Walker

  • We were very pleased to have Kelly return as our Keynote Speaker this year.
  • Kelly is a wonderful story teller. He’s adept at managing audience emotions. As he allowed insights into his own life with its ups and downs it was easy to detect the audience listening intensely either in utmost silence or to laughter at his funny episodes.
  • We were reminded that every chapter in our life has a meaning. There are no “lost” chapters. Some chapters try to teach us more lessons and make us a little wiser to enter life’s next chapter.
  • He left us with some thought provoking anecdotes to keep us vibrant in the coming year.

Photos from the event

Our event is by far the best known and recognized nursing footcare conference. Here are a few comments from our participants:

Thank you for all your extreme hard work and hours of planning. My first conference and found it so interesting, great insights, new methods, most helpful to maintain safe foot care. The mix of speakers were also helpful as many aspects of practice and theory and professionalism were all integrated into the day. Thanks for everything, wonderful experience of new dreams and adventure in footcare. Wonderful closure with Kelly Walker, vibrant.
